Director - District 5

Ms. Erica knappKnapp

I am honored to be your newly elected school board member. I have lived in Arlington for 15 years, moving from Everett. My husband and I are raising three children who attend the Arlington School District. We have found wonderful support through the teachers and staff. As a parent of three children, including a neurodiverse learner; I have a range of insight into the challenges faced by students, parents, and teachers.

I spent my elementary years in Carnation, Washington before being placed in an alternative/religious school where I spent the remainder of my school years and graduated. I was a quiet kid who begged my parents to take me to the library; I was always looking for ways to learn and be a helper. Upon graduation, I entered the workforce. Balancing work and education, I gained a vocational certificate before starting my own business.

Because my alternative/religious school was small and with its own challenges, I was not able to fulfill as many of the opportunities that I wanted. As a school board director, I am looking forward to making collaborative decisions that support the success of each student.

When my kids were babies, I attended Everett Community College and completed an Associates in Fine Art with Honors. I have instructed after school art classes in most of our elementary schools. Teaching art classes is where I found a deeper connection with Arlington students, teachers, and school staff. I have volunteered in my kids’ schools, attended parent teacher conferences, PTSA events, and found support in our community.

I first became interested in civic engagement when I owned a small business in Snohomish, Washington. I will work to encourage students, families, and staff to stay engaged while recognizing needs in our community to be a vocal advocate. Last year I joined the ACE committee and Diversity Team through the school district.

~ The pandemic brought unprecedented challenges and amplified inequities.
~ I am committed to being a sounding board for student voices, parents, teachers, para educators, and school employees.
~I value communication and continued growth.
~ I will work to ensure a smart use of funds and that the budget aligns with the district’s strategic plan.

Arlington is a vibrant community, and I will work for more frequent community engagement in the schools.

I am excited for the opportunity to serve the Arlington School District, let’s grow together to be the best we can be.
