Attendance

Achieve Today ImageSchool attendance should be a priority every day
School is well underway and we want to see your child each day! Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school – and themselves. This habit should be started at a young age so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college and work.

Studies show that students should miss no more than nine days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track for graduation.

Make sure to talk with your teen about the importance of showing up to school every day. This should be an expectation. Other strategies include:

- Help your teen maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.
- Don’t let your teen stay home unless they’re truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches may be signs of anxiety.

Why Attendance is so important

Attendance is a major focus for Arlington Public Schools. According to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), every absence, When do absences become a problem?excused or unexcused, is a learning opportunity lost and can have significant impacts on a student’s success in school and life. A student who misses 10% or more of their school days, which amounts to 18 or more days in a school year—or just two days a month—for any reason is considered chronically absent. Chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind in reading and math and less likely to graduate from high school. Addressing chronic absenteeism and developing good attendance habits is a solvable problem for which we all share responsibility.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Students miss school for many reasons including illness, lack of transportation, work, homelessness, and family responsibilities. Families understand the importance of education, however, they may not realize how quickly absences from school can add up. Schools, families, and communities can work together to improve attendance and support the needs of families and students.
