Two Haller Middle School students accepted into Junior All-State Band
Junion All-State BandTwo Haller Middle School eighth grade band students auditioned for and were accepted into the Junior All-State Band in January. Jonathan Hill on Tenor Saxophone and Rebeca Lara on Clarinet earned a placement in the Baker Band. Although none of the High School or Junior All-State music groups are meeting in person this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, students were still allowed to audition to earn the honor of being accepted.

“As far as I know, this is the first time in Haller Middle School history that any of our students have made it into a Junior All-State music group,” said Haller Middle School Music Director, Kathy Medema.

The audition process has, for many years, been conducted via video/audio submission. This year, due to the pandemic, students were allowed to submit audio only without needing to be in the presence of their teacher.

“Aside from providing the music and a demonstration recording to students, the students were on their own to learn, perfect and make their recordings,” said Medema. “This is remarkable considering the band students have not met in person for nearly a year.”

Although students will not be gathering for a rehearsal and a performance, the Washington State Music Educators Association felt it was important for students to still be recognized for their hard work and will be mailed a decal and a certificate of congratulations.
