 It is hard to believe we are entering our 20th year! Our library has grown to include about 16,000 books and other media. Our facility is used by classes from 9:00-3:40, and again in the late afternoons and evenings by community groups. We have several brand new computer work stations (thanks to our PTA!) which are used for book searches, research, and for taking Accelerated Reader and Star tests. We have three listening stations with books on tape and CD's for various grade levels. Approximately 4,500 books are in circulation each month.
Our collection includes picture and chapter books, non-fiction books and children's magazines. We also have sets of reference books which students use in skill sets.
Students may check out two books each week for a loan period of one or two weeks.They are encouraged to renew a book for another week or two if they have not finished reading it. A student is not allowed to check out if they have an overdue book, or owe a fine for a lost or damaged book. Kindergarten and first grades keep their library books in their classrooms due to the difficulty in having the little ones return them! It is greatly appreciated when parents help their children to return their books to the library on their library class day. We want all students to check out or renew books every week. I will be seeing the 3rd through 5th grade students and our wonderful paraeducators will see the K-2 students.
All students from mid-first grade on up participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Most of our fiction books have AR quizzes. About a fourth of our non-fiction books do. Please click on the link for complete information.
We have fall and spring Scholastic Book Fairs to fund the purchase of new books for our library. Monetary donations are always welcome at any time to supplement our book budget! Our books are checked out a lot and we need to replace much loved copies whenever we have the funds to do so.

We use a wonderful library program called Follett Destiny. You can access this district site by going to http://libraries.asd.wednet.edu
Teachers, students, and parents can search our complete catalog from home. Parents can see what books their child has checked out, and when the books are due. You can even see if any books are overdue, if a fine has been accrued, and help look for the missing books at home. We REALLY like that feature! (We will continue to email home about overdue books, too.) You can log in using your child's Accelerated Reader user name and number.

My name is Janet Fuller. This is my 9th year as the librarian at Kent Prairie and 24th year with the Arlington School District. My husband and two children are all employed at Boeing. I work in the library from 8:30-12:20 each day and then work as a TItle teacher in the afternoon.I will instruct the 2nd-5th graders and one of our para-educators will work with the first grade and some of our kindergarteners.
Our goals are to motivate all students to experience the joy of reading, and assist them in making choices that are appropriate for their ages and interests. We will expose students to all genres, many fine authors, award-winning titles, old and new series, and various non-fiction subjects. Each grade level has a list of skills they will be taught each trimester. These are posted outside the library door. Second through fifth grade students all receive a grade for one skill each trimester.
It is my pleasure to work with your children and would like to encourage you to contact me if I can assist you in any way. Please help your child remember to bring their books back to school on their library day so they can check out new books every week! I hope they love to curl up with their books each night before going to bed, or get lost in a good story on our rainy weekends.  |
