KEY COMMUNICATORS WASL/AYP scores were released from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) on Friday. You may have seen the articles in the Everett Herald and the Arlington Times. Below is a briefing, please do not hesitate to call or email if you have questions: *As a district, our WASL scores were higher in every grade level and every subject with just a few exceptions. *You will hear of the large jump in schools and districts on the "watch list" due to changes over the past year made to the N size; the use of grade bands at elementary & middle school; and an increase to the uniform bar percentage. *Our schools not making AYP: Arlington HS; Weston; Stilly Valley; Haller; Post; Eagle Creek; Kent Prairie and Presidents. *We enter into Step 1 "District Improvement." (We join Stanwood; Lakewood; and Granite Falls - Lake Stevens & Marysville enter into Step 2 District Improvement). *The requirements for districts who receive Federal Title 1 funds being in Step 1 of District Improvement include - set aside 10% of district Title 1 funds for professional development; notify all parents that we are entering into improvement; revise our district improvement plan. *Schools that do not meet AYP for two consecutive years AND who receive Title 1 funds are subject to sanctions - for us, that means Eagle Creek must offer "public school choice" this year. A letter was sent home to Eagle Creek Elementary families last week. To support increased student achievement in 2009-2010 we are focusing resources to support students in math, revising our District Improvement Plan, engaging in Strategic Planning and organizing opportunities to support parent involvement. We will continue to examine the data and align resources with need. These are complex issues. We encourage our Key Communicators to contact us with questions. Hope you are enjoying your summer and looking forward to an outstanding 09-10 school year!
