Assessment process for including a student into the Highly Capable program:

1. A teacher or parent/guardian wishing to nominate a student for the screening process must submit a completed Nomination Form to the Gifted Specialist or building principal.
2. A Permission to Access letter is sent home with the student, signed by parent/guardian, and returned to Gifted Specialist before testing can occur.
3. Individual assessment of student takes place.
4. A multi-disciplinary team meeting is scheduled to discuss results and determine eligibility.
5. Parent notification of eligibility mailed home following multi-disciplinary team decision.
6. A highly capable program plan is written for eligible students with their parent.

Testing window and eligibility determination:

Teachers and parents/guardians may submit a nomination form at any time during the school year.  Testing will occur within 15 days of receiving written parent/guardian permission.  The multi-disciplinary team will convene within ten school days after the assessment has been completed to determine program eligibility.  Parents are notified in writing using the Assessment Results letter within ten school days.

In accordance with the philosophy to develop the special abilities of each student, the District shall offer appropriate instructional programs to meet the needs of highly capable students of school age.  The superintendent shall establish procedures consistent with State guidelines for nominating, assessing and selecting children of demonstrated achievement or potential ability in terms of general intellectual ability, academic aptitude and creative or productive thinking.
